The Gentleman’s Guide to Winning at Valentine’s Day

Lovely, bearded man being adored

What the dear women in our lives sometimes don’t understand is how men can forget about Valentine’s Day (or anniversaries while we are on the subject). The short of it is, we don’t talk about these things amongst ourselves, and it might literally never come up until it’s too late. Women, on the other hand, not only talk about these things regularly, but it can also become a competition to see who has the most devoted and thoughtful man in their life.

If we do remember to plan ahead, it’s a bit nerve racking. The pressure is real! We really want to do right by you ladies, but these days it seems the old stand-bys of jewelry, chocolate, and flowers scream lack of effort and creativity. And, If we do manage to pull out something great, every year thereafter becomes a platform in which to compare it to.

“I don’t want anything.”

If she says “I don’t want anything for Valentine’s Day” DON’T BELIEVE HER!

It's a trap!

What you hear is “I don’t want anything.” What she really means is she doesn’t want another giant teddy bear, or another heart-shaped pendant anything, or piles of gourmet chocolate. OK, maybe that’s too far…

What she really means is she needs you to acknowledge how much you love and think about her. The good thing is, even if you don’t find the perfect gift, she will still appreciate your sincere efforts.

We want to help the men out there, struggling with being the Master of Valentine’s Day, so we have a few suggestions to help you.

Be the Man with the Plan

This is the year we change the game by preparing for Valentine’s Day like a man.

  • Don’t forget – Odds are you have a smartphone. Pull it out right now, open the calendar, and schedule a reminder for Valentine’s Day. Set the reminder to go off several times: one week before, the day before, and the day of. If you can remember when the playoffs start, you can remember Valentine’s Day. If you want to win this Valentine’s Day, start using the tools that are available to you like these 5 Apps.
  • Plan a memorable experience – Do you want to be remembered as the ultimate gentleman-lover that can still make your little lady swoon after all these years? Then you need to somehow make this day different from the others. The more unique and thoughtful it is, the more points you win. It’s not the size of the wallet that counts; it’s how you use it.

You may consider the typical fancy dinner at a restaurant, but if you really want to impress, you need to commandeer her kitchen and dazzle her with your culinary powers. Try these easy ideas that are sure to make her drool.

  • Make something – Whether it’s a simple card, one-of-a-kind jewelry, or hand-crafted chocolates, nothing tells her she is special like using your skills and ingenuity to make something. Ladies love guys who make things. It is a huge step-up from simply buying holiday merchandise meant to take advantage of your desperation.
  • Give a gift that matters – Jewelry is nice, but are you really going to give the same thing to her every birthday, Valentine’s Day, and anniversary, year after year? Nothing screams “lack of effort” like the expensive trinket close to the checkout. Surely you have received gifts from someone that were gifts of obligation, i.e. “it’s the thought that counts”. You may have also received very niche-specific presents so unique to you it seems as though they read your mind (or maybe your diary). In the spirit of gift-giving, you definitely want to be in the latter camp. Here are a few gift ideas that will blow the garters off your lady this Valentine’s Day.

Floriani Thread Packs – You may not even know what this is, but it is like the mimetic polyalloy of thread. It has a beautiful sheen like rayon, yet all the strength of polyester, and it runs great on embroidery machines.

Scissors – Quality scissors for various types of cutting, are a must-have for the serious sewer in your life. They’re just as important as the different saws a craftsman uses or the various knives employed by a chef.

Stabilizers – These are the scaffolding of embroidery. Various types for various applications; stabilizers help hold fabric flat during the embroidery process. It’s best to keep several types and products on hand, as different types go with different fabrics.

Quilting Software – If you’ve ever used CAD (computer-aided design) to plan a house, build furniture, or design a new product, then you realize the benefits and speed of these types of applications. Quilting software is much the same– but for quilts.

Design Packs – These pre-made patterns help the creator craft new projects without having to reinvent the wheel. Learn how to create challenging projects without getting overwhelmed or having to do the design by hand.

Couple having a romantic dinner at home

“My most brilliant achievement was my ability to be able to persuade my wife to marry me.” – Winston Churchill

In the end, I like to think that romance is about the intangibles. It’s about the things that money can’t buy. This year, don’t wait until the last minute to give that special someone a run-of-the-mill Valentine’s Day. Instead, make an impact with a unique experience and memorable gifts that won’t just sit in a box and collect dust.
