We will go through all the pattern markings, how to lay out your pattern pieces correctly, read the instructions and go over sewing terms together so we understand the abbreviations.
We will also go over the different methods of marking fabrics where needed and the various tools you can use.
If we have time, we will sew up some samples of garment elements so in the next class, Beginning Sewing, students have a handle on how to assemble the garment.
SUPPLY LIST:
- A Simplicity or McCalls pattern for woven fabrics only.
- DO NOT start with any of the others as they are more difficult to read and understand
- Do NOT get a knit/stretch pattern.
- I will have some extras on hand if you cannot obtain any at an affordable price.
- Watch JoAnn's for sales of $!.99 per pattern, usually on the weekends only
- Sewing Machine
- Cotton scraps about the size of a fat quarter (several pieces of contrasting colors)
- Size 10 or 12 needles
- Pins or clips (Preferably pins)
- Threads 1 to match, 1 to contrast your fabric
- Scissors
- Flexible tape measure
- Notebook and pencil (for notes and questions)
- Seam ripper
- Seam gauge
- Marking pens for the fabric
- Hand sewing needles
